MOFA Attestation FAQ

What is MOFA attestation and why is it needed?

MOFA attestation is the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs stamp on a document, confirming it is genuine and has been issued by a recognized UAE authority. It is required when using UAE-issued or UAE-notarized documents in foreign countries; embassies, universities, employers, and government bodies abroad will typically not accept UAE documents without MOFA attestation.

What is the difference between apostille and MOFA attestation in the UAE?

The UAE joined the Hague Apostille Convention in 2021. For countries that are also part of the Convention, UAE documents can now be apostilled instead of going through the full attestation chain. For non-Hague countries, MOFA attestation (and often embassy attestation) is still required. We advise on which process applies to your destination country.

How long does MOFA attestation take in Dubai?

Standard MOFA attestation in Dubai takes 2–5 business days through official channels. Express services may be available for an additional fee. The total timeline depends on whether embassy attestation is also required.

Does MOFA attestation need to happen after Dubai Courts notarization?

Yes. For UAE-issued documents, the standard order is: Dubai Courts notarization → MOFA attestation → embassy attestation (if required). We handle the full chain or any individual step you need.

Which documents cannot be attested by MOFA?

Documents with errors, alterations, or incomplete information may be rejected. Documents from unrecognized institutions are also rejected. We review your documents before submission to flag any issues that would cause rejection.
