Why Every Expat in Dubai Needs a Will

If you die without a registered will in the UAE, your UAE assets will be distributed according to UAE Sharia inheritance law, regardless of your religion or nationality. This can mean your spouse does not automatically inherit, your children's guardianship is uncertain, and your bank accounts are frozen until a UAE court decides.

A notarized and registered will changes this entirely. It ensures your assets go to the people you choose, your children have a named guardian, and your family avoids months of legal complications at the worst possible time.

I have seen families in Deira face this situation. After 29 years at Dubai Courts, I cannot emphasize strongly enough: if you live and own assets in the UAE, you need a registered will. Mousa Al Amri

Will & Testament FAQ

Do expats need a will in the UAE?

Without a will, UAE Sharia inheritance law applies to assets in the UAE regardless of your nationality or religion. This means assets may not pass to your intended beneficiaries. For expats, a properly registered will is the most important legal document you can have in the UAE.

Where should expats register a will in Dubai?

Expats can register wills through the DIFC Wills Service Centre (for non-Muslim expats covering Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah), or through Dubai Courts. Each has different procedures and fees. We advise on the best option for your specific situation.

Can I use a will written in my home country for UAE assets?

A foreign will may be recognized in the UAE, but it must be translated, attested, and submitted through the courts. This is a complex and expensive process at a difficult time for your family. A UAE-registered will avoids this entirely.

What assets can a UAE will cover?

A UAE will can cover bank accounts, real estate in Dubai, vehicles, personal property, business interests (LLC shares), and financial investments held in the UAE. Assets outside the UAE require separate planning.

How much does it cost to register a will in Dubai?

DIFC Wills Service fees start around AED 10,000 for a single will. Dubai Courts options can be less expensive. Our service fee for drafting and guidance is quoted separately. WhatsApp us for a detailed breakdown.
